Whareama School was established in 1897 and is a state, co-educational full primary school, incorporating Year 0-8.
The school is situated 40 kilometres from Masterton and 17 kilometres from Riversdale Beach. There are three classrooms, a library, an office and administration area, a resource room, a staffroom and principals office. The grounds have an adventure playground, tennis court, cricket wicket and net, swimming pool and concreted areas. We have 3 school buses that pick up and drop off students from around the East Coast and from Masterton. DESCRIPTION OF THE SCHOOL COMMUNITYWhareama is a Decile 6 school. It is in a rural community and half of the children come from farming families. Other families have occupations that see them travel to town or out of the area for work.
One quarter of the students are maori and and the rest are pakeha and there is a gender mix of approximately half girls and boys. There is a close relationship between the school and the playgroup which allows for a smooth transition of new entrants to school. The community supports student learning through being members on the Board of Trustees and providing help with transport and supervision on school trips and attending school events. They also contribute significantly to fundraising.
The community is mindful of the isolation of rural living and rural education and back's the schools efffort's to participate is as many activities in town as possible. On the other hand they recognise the many quality opportunities the smaller numbers at Whareama School provide. The maori community is very supportive of the school and are engaged in raising the bicultural awareness. |
