Enviroschool and Team Green

This term we have started to re establish a Team Green enviro group. The Team Green will be made up of the year 7 and 8 students in order to act as guardians of the enviroschool ethics, guidelines and desires so they can lead younger students and build sustainable thinkers.

Team Green will work with the other students , staff and board to continue our enviroschool role building a sustainable school and educating others in how this can be achieved and strive for earning enviroschool certificates or recognition.

We have three key areas in which we will be responsible during term1. The Church garden at St Andrews in Langdale Road, The Native area at school (a work in progress) and the school vegetable garden. All of these areas require maintenance and development. On top of these three projects we intend to have a compost system set up and in use asap.

Watch this space for Team Green profiles shortly.

We had a  successful school vision being put together last year the sudents and staff are now working to build our enviro understanding and implement "Team Green" to become a sustainable future thinking school.

We will be focussing on the current gardens (including the church garden) to improve the appearance of these and have the opportunity to work with our local Marae at Homewood assisting with planting and weeding.

After experimenting in 2012 with different composting techniques and worm farms we plan to install a compost bin and worm farm on the grounds.

Team Green is made up of the year 7 and 8 students but wil involve the whole school for various projects over the year.

Check out our Team Green Profiles coming soon. Thanks Katz

Whareama is working towards becoming an Enviroschool.  The Enviroschools programme aims to empower and enable individuals, families and schools to work together to create healthy, peaceful and sustainable communities.  Building strong connections and trusting relationships is at the heart of this, as is fostering a culture of creativity and sharing.
Enviroschool programmes are designed to:
  • Encourage positive change and action.
  • Enable the development of skills, knowledge, confidence and experience to contribute to their communities.
  • Integrate Māori perspectives.
  • Encourage awareness and understanding of the ecosystems that we are all part of.
  • Connect children and young people/tamariki and rangatahi to contribute to their communities.
  • Promote respect for the diversity of people and cultures in our communities and world.

At Whareama we try to think enviromentally friendly where we can but are at the beginning of the Enviroschools process.  The students are currently developing a plan/vision of where and how we would like to develop our school further in an environmental and sustainable way and we will use this to drive our learning programmes and develop our school enviroment over the years to come.

Team Green

Please check out the member of our Enviroschool team.....aptly named 'Team Green'.  They are the gate keepers of our environmental projects and help develop our school's environmental sustainability theory.
